Song Review: SASAMI - Just Be Friends

SASAMI’s upcoming album Blood on the Silver Screen, which is to be released March 7th, 2025, offers a new single, ‘Just Be Friends,’ one that has been produced and mixed alongside Jennifer Decilveo and Geoff Swan. It’s a perfectly sweet and balanced blend of country influences, rock, and of course, pop.

For those who are in the midst of complete and utter yearning, paired with the longing for something more than those feelings of loneliness that creep in, this one’s for you. The song reads like something the majority are more than familiar with. It tells the story of a love that once was or could have been. Coupled with the folksy pick chirps, guitar, and drums, the reminiscent lyrics paint a picture of a relationship that, although didn’t work out in the end, is something you still crave.

“I know that I've been selfish, and I ended it the first time

But maybe if it's different and we listen to the first signs

Of warning that we're burning out

Baby, we can make it again

Or maybe we should just be friends.”

It’s a song of the past, and on the other hand, a tale of modern, playful love. The beautiful contradiction of a nostalgic country tune and upbeat pop melody leave us torn between moving on and wishing for something that, in truth, wasn’t meant to be.

She said this in a press release regarding the single: “‘Just Be Friends’ feels like a really grown-up continuation of themes/moods from my first two albums. I returned to some of the stream-of-consciousness, emotional lyrical writing style of my first album and kept riding the country wave that was in the fabric of Squeeze but with a bit more modern country influence. I love how country songs often tell a story. Longing, lingering, loneliness and lust. When I play this one live I always dedicate it to anyone ‘sad and horny’ in the crowd… if that means anything.”

Love is chaos; it occasionally leads to self-destruction, but without it, who would we be? What would we learn about ourselves? If you’re anything like me and you’re always itching for another track to encapsulate the angst that likes to slither out during obscene hours, you might just want to keep your eyes locked and calendars marked for March of next year.
